I’m of two minds. It’s one of my biggest strengths!
I’ve been creative all my life. Music, art and drawing, graphic design, photography, writing, videography, crochet…I’ve always had a hand in something expressive. But I also have over two decades in tech and coding, specifically web design and development, UI/UX, working extensively in front-end code and occasionally backend as well.
The two halves of my brain are pretty communicative. I like to say that whatever my role is, I can speak the language of my team members, be they creatives or technical. I have no trouble handing off or being handed any aspect of the web development process. I’ve brainstormed, wireframed, proposed, designed, branded, coded, worked on backend code and databases, and prototyped. I’ve been on all sides of the process, for both external and internal clients.
I have a keen interest in UI and UX design. In my most recent role, I was person on the team who focused on our users. I worked with our backend developers on user interface features on our site, and prototyped and coded the HTML5/CSS3 for our menus and other UI for our site redesign and subsequent feature releases, as well as designing compelling web pages.
I have other endearing traits as well. Like most creatives, I’m easygoing, flexible, and adaptable. But I chase down bugs in code like they personally offended me. I will find a way to make code do my bidding. Yes, even you, HTML email for PC Outlook. I adore a challenge, and I get up to speed fast. If there’s some acronym or application not listed on my resume, don’t worry, I love becoming the expert in something new. I thrive when finding a better solution or a new methodology, and I like to work smart.
Do I have foibles? Of course! But I think my strengths make me a great team member and my experience a huge asset. It’s funny, taking the time to look back on what I achieved while I wasn’t looking. I started out in self-employment after the Dot Com bubble burst…there were no jobs in web after I had painstakingly gotten training in the field. I’m glad I didn’t give up. I still really enjoy what I do.

A little more on the personal side…I miss being an oil painter and poet. I took up cello 3 years ago to give me a challenge at the beginning of the pandemic (first year plus entirely remote) and I feel like I’ve finally found my instrument (flute, tenor sax, bassoon, oboe…were all great, but cello!).
Oh, and I’m an avid sailor, something I started learning 5 years ago, and now I co-own a 36-foot sailboat. She’s a handful! But there is nothing like raising sail and shutting off that diesel engine and flying through the water thanks to Bernoulli’s Principle. Sailing is another place where art meets the technical. I’ve learned so much as skipper of sailboats, gaining more confidence in my decision-making skills, and learning the language of sailing, which I can tell you…every part, piece, corner, and maneuver has its own unique name, and you better know them to talk with your crew. Precise communication is key in sailing, and in UI development projects.
So if you cast off your lines with me on your team, I can definitely say that you will have fair winds and a following sea!
